Pinto International Classic Day 1 Recap

Day one action of pool play began yesterday at the 2018 Affordable Gas & Electric Pinto International Baseball Classic in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, and as is the norm in Pinto League baseball, it was a day for offense. In the 10 games that were played yesterday, 14 teams scored double-digit runs in their respective games. Lawrenceville, Illinois, Murphysboro, Illinois, Paradera, Aruba and Sparta, Illinois all ascended to the top of the tournament standings, after finishing day one with 2-0 records, respectively.

The two most competitive games were Carmi, Illinois versus Manila, Philippines and Sparta versus Herrin, Illinois. Trailing 13-9 going into the top of the sixth inning, Carmi went on a two-out rally. With Kaleb Belcher on third base, Xavier Courson hit an RBI single (13-10). Blaine Courson then singled, setting the table for Cole Evans, who knocked a ball into right field. Evans trotted into second, as both Coursons rounded the bases thanks to some errant throws and scored the 11th and 12th runs of the game for Carmi. Unfortunately for Carmi, a infield pop up ended what was a thrilling game between both teams.

The Coursons and Belcher led Carmi with three hits apiece, while Matteo Diligencia paced Manila by going 3-for-3. Diligencia was one of nine players for the Philippines to record multiple hits in the game, as the team finished with 20 total.

In the final game of day one, Sparta's early 13-6 lead could not be overcome, as Herrin fell one run short. After scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth, trailing by three with two outs, Hudson Holland started the rally with a single. He then advanced a base on Fisher Perry's single to the outfield, bringing Gavin Childers to the plate. Childers hit a perfectly-placed ground ball triple into right field, scoring Holland and Perry and putting the potential game-tying run at third base. Unfortunately for Herrin, a fly out to left field ended the game, as Sparta walked away 2-0.

Camden Allard-Lewis, Braxton Glodo, Camden Steinwagner and Jaxon Cratch finished the day for Sparta with a team-high three hits. Glodo led the team with six total bases, and was tied with those three other Sparta hitters for the team lead in RBI (three). On the other side, Perry, Childers, Jaxon Hudson and JJ Gwaltney all led Herrin with three hits each. Gwaltney paced the team with three RBI.
